Topics- Tetradotoxin/puffer fish poisoning
Tetradotoxin is a neurotoxin.
Sources are puffer fish (পটকা মাছ) and blue ringed octopus.
Ingestion induce pleasure sensations with oral tingling.
Whole fish is poisonous including liver, viscera, gonad, skin etc.
This toxin is heat stable. Fatal (more lethal than cyanide) and no specific antidote.
Symptoms develops within 30 min of ingestion but may be delayed upto 4 hours.
It blocks Na + conductance in axonal transmission. It also causes peripheral vasodilation and hypotension.
Other clinical features-
Cardiovascular collapse etc.
